As an oceanographer, I am frequently asked, "What is so important about bioluminescence? Are there any real applications?" I usually describe its uses in genetics and environmental monitoring. Anyway, I found a nice summary article on the web and thought you'd and others might find it useful.
And as for bioluminescence for fourth graders, check out a company called Prolume. In addition to research, they make bioluminescenct toys. I think the BioToy division is at www.biotoy.com.
