Main Street Weather (Weather Home Base!!)

Here is a collection of the weather links I visit on a daily basis, some more than others depending upon the weather situation and time of year. I use these sites in my teaching and to fulfill my insatiable appetite for the weather. There are a wide variety of sources ranging from the best weather machines to regional weather, FAX, radar, single frame satellite imagery, computer model forecasts, hurricanes, typhoons, MPEG movies (visible, infrared & water vapor) and buoy data from the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico. Just what did weather fanatics do for fun before the invention of the internet?

Don't forget other Weather Machines, and Computer Models for further info on severe weather!

Latest 500 mb analysis. While one map can't possibly tell the whole story, upper air maps often provide clues as to where conditions are "ripe" for severe weather outbreaks. Upper air winds flow parallel to the black height lines. Look for "dips" in these black height lines and vorticity as designated by the colors. This map is used to help predict where strong thunderstorms will occur. The "redder" the color, the more spin and lift in the atmosphere, which can result in severe weather. So, how do you read these puppies? Skew T Map details and instructions can be found at Purdue University Weather Machine. To excerpt:"The pressure lines are plotted horizontally in yellow and are also on an inverse log scale. The concept of Skew T means that the temperature is not plotted vertically but angles off to the right at a 45 degree angle. The temperature lines of the Skew T are in brown. The green lines are called dry adiabats (dashed and Solid Light Green Line). The light purple dashed lines are saturation adiabats. The light blue dashed lines are lines of constant mixing ratio." The Red Solid Line is the Environmental Temperature. The Wide Blue Line is the Dew Point temperature.

    Some Help!

There are several terms which you may want to look up (from Texas A&M's Convective Analyses and Forecast Page.) These include:

NOAA has a glossary of weather terms for storm spotters. And of course, Purdue University also provides some very helpful details of the significance of a variety of Severe Weather Indices. Hope this helps clear up some of your confusion!
