Marine Ecology Outline #1
This outline is pretty naked right now. I want to cover the symbiotic relationships that occur on and around coral reefs and the importance of such relationships.

1) Symbiosis
a) Definition
¥A close, prolonged association between two or more different organisms of different species that may, but does not necessarily, benefit each member.
b) Why itÕs necessary

2)Commensalisms
a) Definition
¥A symbiotic relationship between two organisms of different species in which one derives some benefit while the other is unaffected.
b) Examples
¥Crabs or Shrimps and anemones
¥Pearl fish and a particular species of sea cucumber
¥Sea cucumber (Actinopyga) and the swimmer crab
¥Isopods and fish
¥tiny shrimp and branches of a feather starfish, or crinoid
¥neon gobies and big fish
¥Emperor Shrimp on Actinopyga
¥Swimmer crab on urchin Actinopyga

3)Mutualism
a) Definition
¥An association between organisms of two different species in which each member benefits
b) Examples
¥Anemone Hermit crab (Dardanusm pedunculatus) and small sea anemones
¥Clownfish and sea anemones

¥Jellyfish (Cassiopeia xamachan) and zooxanthellae
¥Hermatypic (reef-building) corals and zooxanthellae or coral polyps
¥Gobies, Wrasse, and Shrimps and large fish
¥Emperor shrimp on sea cucumber

4)Parasitism
a) Definition
¥A symbiotic relationship in which one species, the parasite, benefits at the expense of the other, the host
b) Examples
¥Caribbean reef shark, lemon shark, tiger shark and sharksucker
¥pacific manta ray and remora

5) How different organisms use symbiosis
a) Camouflage
¥Pencilfish or seahorse normally resides in the buoyant grass beds
b) Cleaning
¥Cleaner Shrimp and Grouper
c) Defense
¥Carrier Crab and Urchins
d) Transportation
¥Barnacles and crab carapace or snail shells
