Melissa and friends walk the streets of Bocas, Panama.
I will be teaching the class about the commmon dieseases that are causing corals through the Carribean reef systems to die off, addressing the causes (when known) of such illnesses, and their effects. I believe it is important to address the different reasons for reef decimation, and such diseases play a large role. While we are exploring the reef systems of the Keys and the Bahamas, we are sure to encounter prime examples of the different afflictions effecting coral, and it would be helpful to understand the different reasons that the coral has died.
A general outline of the diseases covered will include...
Black Band Disease
Red Band Disease
Dark Spots Disease
White Band Disease
Yellow Blotch Disease
Due to the wealth of information I've been finding on the different diseases, I may focus on a select few that we are most likely to encounter; I'll post a more complete outline in the next few days to give a better picture of what I'll be presenting on.
The website I posted gives a good general overview of the different diseases and has some interesting pictures :).
