Question

While taking into
account the reasons for the western ponds creation and reasons for maintenance
including drainage, aeration and species addition, is the western pond a balanced
ecosystem that manages the life that resides in it at an ideal level.

Interdisciplinary Approach

Cultural Ideas
covered:

  1. Why was the pond built

  2. Why is money spent to maintain it

  3. Reasons People Restock it

  4. Why we force birds to stay at the pond

  5. Rules to the Pond (can we add animals or remove them)

Social Ideas
covered:

  1. Funding

  2. Rules (laws covering its construction and maintenance)

  3. Current Purpose

  4. Reasons for Restock

Science Ideas covered:

  1. Is Restocking fish Healthy for the pond

  2. Is forcing Birds to stay Healthy for the pond

  3. Current health of the pond. (PH, Sediment loads, Dissolved O2, Nitrogen,
    Phosphorus, Fecal Coliform )

Specific Predictions:

We believe that
even though Miami has taken steps to balance the system it will still be at
a significantly lower health level then a natural pond.

We predict that
the health of the pond has been at a disequilibrium over the last few years

Preliminary Research Design:

  1. We will test the pond for current health

  2. Speak with Physical Phisilitys about western pond history and cost of maintenance.

  3. We will share research with the other western group.
